About Sherman Yu

Sherman C. Yu, MD was recently named one of America’s Top Surgeons by Consumers Research Council of America and has been recognized as a Centers of Excellence® Surgeon by the Surgical Review Corporation. Dr. Yu is a member in good standing with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and he was the first surgeon in Houston to perform the Single Incision Laparoscopic (SILS) gastric sleeve procedure. He is also the first surgeon in the Houston area to perform the SILS adjustable gastric band procedure. He is widely regarded as one of the best weight loss surgeons in the Houston area.

A Houston native, Dr. Yu graduated with high honors in chemical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He then earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine with honors in his surgical rotations.

While performing his surgical training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Dr. Yu developed a special interest in laparoscopic surgery and minimally invasive techniques for obesity treatment. As a resident physician at that institution, Dr. Yu authored a variety of research articles and presented his findings at a number of national conferences. During his time at the University of Colorado, Dr. Yu also earned the title of Chief Resident in Surgery.

After returning to Houston, Dr. Yu completed a year-long fellowship in robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Yu focused on bariatric surgery and continued to do research in the field of obesity surgery. He published many articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented his findings at national and international meetings. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Yu was offered the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center, a position he held until 2008. Dr. Yu is certified in the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System and is a proctor for Ethicon EndoSurgery, an organization that trains surgeons from across the US in performing the REALIZE® Adjustable Gastric Band procedure. He is the Bariatric Medical Director at Park Plaza Hospital.
